Our History:
Our first policy of
insurance was written April 1, 1925. Our name back then was New York
Cooperative Underwriters, the Combination Policy Facility comprised entirely
of companies having membership in the Cooperative Fire Underwriters
Association of New York State, which was organized in 1898. Throughout its
longevity, as many as 22 companies participated in the Combination Policy.
The Combination
Policy Facility was designed for the purpose of being of benefit to the
insuring public, agents, and the Member Companies. In the early 1900’s, the
State imposed limitations on the amount of insurance that one insurance
company could provide on any one risk. New York Cooperative Underwriters
could issue policies with amounts of coverage larger than any one Member
could write, in which the Members would share premiums, losses, and
expenses. This was a great benefit to policyholders, agents, and the Member
Companies themselves.
In 1942, the
Cooperative Fire Underwriters Association of New York State received
approval from the New York State Insurance Department to issue a Combination
Policy under the name “New York Mutual Underwriters.” Over the years,
several of the original Member Companies merged with each other or withdrew
from the Combination Policy Facility. New York Mutual Underwriters is at
this time composed of two Member Companies, both of whom are descendants of
original Members, Security Mutual Insurance Company, Ithaca, New York, and
Sterling Insurance Company, Cobleskill, New York.
